Restless leg syndrome (RLS) can cause you to feel anxious and uncomfortable, and even prevent you from getting sleep. While there is no known cause of RLS, recent studies have found connections between this condition and attention-deficit hyperactive disorder, or ADHD.

Vein Institute has locations in Avon, Fairfield, Newtown and Shelton, Connecticut, and each one has a team of doctors and staff equipped to help with restless leg syndrome and any vein issues that exacerbate it. So what is RLS, and how is it connected to ADHD?

What is restless leg syndrome (RLS)?

Restless leg syndrome, also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a condition that causes restlessness in the legs, or a desire to move around. It is considered a sleep disorder because it typically occurs while you are trying to sleep or rest. The sensations experienced by those with RLS vary from person to person, ranging from vague descriptions to more detailed feelings, including:

  • Creeping/crawling

  • Electric shocks

  • Aching/throbbing

  • Itching

The sensations might be alleviated by walking, running, or jiggling the legs. However, this condition can make it difficult to sleep and relax, or sit still during classes, meetings, plane rides, and other forms of travel.

The connection between ADHD and RLS

Some studies have shown that large numbers of people with RLS also experience symptoms of ADHD, and have a high likelihood of having both conditions. According to one study, 39% of subjects with RLS tested “possible” for ADHD, and 21% tested “highly likely” for the condition.

To reinforce this further, the 21% were tested against controls with ADHD, and those with RLS experienced higher rates of anxiety than their counterparts. This implies a connection, though not a causal link, between those with ADHD and anxiety and those with restless leg syndrome.

However, vein issues can have a great impact on the severity of restless leg syndrome, and treatments for various vein problems can alleviate symptoms and help those with RLS find relief.

What are my treatment options?

Your treatment options depend largely on your unique needs. When seeking help for RLS, the doctor working with you will assess your symptoms and recommend treatments that might help. These might include:

Receiving treatment for ADHD or anxiety at the same time can also help with the symptoms you experience due to RLS. Your doctor can give you advice and help you move forward with various treatments until you find one that works for you.
