Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

Uterine fibroids are often noncancerous growths that develop in the wall of your uterus. While they don’t always cause symptoms, large fibroids can cause pain and heavy bleeding. Here at Vein Institute, your expert provider can eliminate painful uterine fibroids with minimally invasive treatments. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a non-surgical minimally invasive procedure that preserves your uterus. Ready to explore the benefits of UFE?

What is uterine fibroid embolization?

An embolization procedure relies on the insertion of tiny particles to block the flow of blood in a particular blood vessel. Embolization procedures may be recommended to block the flow of blood to abnormal tissue growths or tumors. In the case of uterine fibroid embolization, small particles are placed strategically to block off blood flow to your fibroid, which then causes the fibroid to shrink.

Not all uterine fibroids cause symptoms, but depending on the size and location of the fibroid, you might experience painful, heavy periods, abnormal bleeding throughout your menstrual cycle, and lower back pain. Some fibroids can impact fertility if they block your fallopian tubes. Left untreated, uterine fibroids can continue to grow, causing your symptoms to worsen. UFE treatment can relieve your discomfort while keeping your uterus intact.

What happens during a uterine fibroid embolization?

Unlike traditional open surgery, UFE is minimally invasive. There's no need to visit the hospital or plan for an overnight procedure. Your UFE procedure takes place right here in the comfort of our Vein Institute offices.

Because UFE is minimally invasive, your incision in your groin is small, just about the size of a pencil tip. Your provider then inserts a catheter through your veins until it reaches the fibroid's blood supply. Special particles, about the size of grains of sand, are placed so that they block the small blood vessels that supply your fibroid with oxygen and other nutrients.

Because the nutrient supply to your fibroid is decreased, the fibroid softens and starts to shrink. As this process continues, you’ll notice less bleeding and discomfort. Approximately 90% of women who undergo UFE experience significant improvement in their symptoms.

This procedure is effective for treating multiple fibroids, and the recurrence of treated fibroids with UFE is rare.
